What an Agriculture Internship in Canada Is Really Like | Campbell Land

Updated: Jan 13

If you’re looking for an agriculture internship in Canada that offers real responsibility, hands-on learning, and full immersion in farm life, Campbell Land provides a grounded, project-based experience in Northern Alberta.

This is not classroom farming. This is real work, real seasons, and real growth — supported within a family-run farm environment.

Looking for a university-level agriculture internship in Canada?

Campbell Land is a family-run farm in Northern Alberta offering agriculture internships for university students and separate volunteer farming programs for those exploring farm life.

Who These Internships Are For

Campbell Land offers opportunities for people ages 16–30.

  • Internships are designed for students studying agriculture or related fields

  • Volunteer positions are for those who want to explore farming before committing to formal study

You don’t need a lot of farm experience. matters most is mindset.

The people who thrive here are curious, open-minded, and ready to learn. They understand that some days are challenging, that teamwork matters, and that showing up with a good attitude makes all the difference.

You don’t need prior knowledge on how we do things, but you do need to be open to learning how farming works in a northern climate with its own conditions, timing, and realities.

Who This Is Not a Good Fit

Campbell Land is not the right environment for everyone, and that’s okay.

This experience may not be a fit if you:

  • Struggle to be away from your phone (there are no-phone zones for safety and focus)

  • Aren’t prepared for consistent, full workdays

  • Expect school-style flexibility or “redos.”

  • Aren’t ready to start at the bottom and prove yourself through action

  • Find it difficult to stretch emotionally when things feel tiring or frustrating

This is real-life farming. We work with equipment, animals, crops, and tight seasonal deadlines. Safety, responsibility, and awareness matter.

English does not need to be perfect, but basic comprehension is important for safety. Responsibility increases as understanding and confidence grow.

What Makes Campbell Land Different

Campbell Land is a project-based learning environment with many years of experience hosting international students and interns.

Here, you are:

  • Part of a family, not just a placement

  • Given real responsibility and supported as you rise to it

  • Trained carefully, then trusted to work independently and as part of a team

Interns are immersed in:

  • Daily farm life through the season

  • Gardens and animals as part of our self-sufficient lifestyle

  • Operating equipment

  • field scouting

  • A mechanical shop where maintenance, repairs, and organization are part of learning

Students leave with stronger English, practical confidence, resilience, self-reliance, and leadership skills. Watching that growth brings us genuine pride.

What Farm Life Is Really Like

There are no truly “typical” days on a working farm.

Each day adjusts to:

  • Weather

  • Crop development

  • Equipment needs

  • Short planting and harvesting windows

Days start early and can be long because the season is short, and time is precious. Summer includes a lot of preparation —swathers, combines, trucks, grain storage, and augers.

Students enjoy the long days of summer in Northern Alberta.

There is also space for life beyond work. Students explore local lakes, hike, fish, go camping, visit our cabin surrounded by wildlife, attend community events, rodeos, Canada Day celebrations, and more. Many are welcomed into the community quickly and feel included before they even realize it. Most interns go on a road trip to Jasper in the Rocky Mountains.

What Students Learn Beyond Agriculture

The most successful students focus on doing their best, supporting each other, and making the most of their time.

They learn to:

  • Think independently while respecting direction

  • Communicate clearly (spoken, text, or phone calls) and make decisions together

  • Handle pressure and responsibility

  • Build stamina and confidence over time

Trust is earned through consistency and action. As responsibility is demonstrated, more responsibility is given. It’s a steady maturing process that happens naturally through daily life and work.

Northern Alberta Shapes the Experience

Campbell Land is located in a remote, spacious part of Northern Alberta.

Students experience:

  • Wide open land and wildlife

  • Quiet and distance from crowds

  • Long summer days — often called the land of the midnight sun

Weather can change quickly, which teaches adaptability, resilience, and awareness. The environment itself becomes a teacher.

The Commitment We Ask For

We ask participants to be 100% present and committed for the time they are here.

Not perfect. Not experienced. Just willing, engaged, and ready to participate fully. When someone truly wants to be here, everything else works.

Student success.
